From LEGO Bricks to City Streets: Meet Budapest’s Giant Tram

This holiday season, Budapest's Deák Ferenc Square has been graced with a truly unique attraction: the world’s first life-sized LEGO tram! Constructed from nearly 1.8 million LEGO bricks, this colorful and eye-catching tram measures 11.5 meters long, 2 meters high, and 2 meters wide. While it can't take you for a ride, it certainly brings a lot of joy to both the young and the young at heart.

The tram, affectionately dubbed "LEGO Vili," was esigned by the talented Balázs Dóczy. The tram is a playful homage to both public transport and creativity. Its vibrant appearance might make it look like something a child built with their favorite LEGO blocks, but a closer look reveals the incredible amount of work and precision that went into creating it.

Visitors already left their own additions on the tram

Built entirely out of traditional LEGO bricks (no special "LEGO Technic" pieces here!), the tram is a marvel of engineering. It took 90 builders over 6,800 hours to assemble the structure, which is a feat in itself, especially since moving such a massive creation posed a unique challenge.

Visitors to Deák Ferenc Square can marvel at the LEGO tram until December 20th. Even better, you can leave your own mark on the creation! The tram’s lower part is fitted with baseplates, so you can add your own LEGO piece to the structure, making it a fun and interactive experience for all ages.

The LEGO tram also serves as a nod to Budapest’s rich history of tram travel, which has been a staple of the city since 1887. While this LEGO version doesn’t carry passengers, it’s an exciting way to celebrate the city's love for trams, innovation, and play. The installation encourages people to think about the importance of public transport and its role in creating a sustainable, green city.

So, if you're in Budapest this December, don't miss the chance to see this one-of-a-kind, giant LEGO tram. It’s the perfect blend of nostalgia, creativity, and festive cheer—reminding everyone of the magic that can happen when play and transportation come together.
