History
The Citadel, or "Citadella" in Hungarian, was built by the Habsburgs in 1854 after the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. It served as a fortress and military outpost, designed to control and intimidate the city below. Although its original purpose was to keep the Hungarians in check, it has since become a symbol of resilience and a beloved historical site.
